DPH: Comparing Physical & Digital Public History

As with much else in the humanities, public history is a very multifaceted field. Examples of public history can include museums to preservation sites to even organized events; the field allows for far more than just indoor exhibits, and public interaction and engagement are common themes of public history. The field is also marked by its proficiency in adapting with the times to ensure that the public remains connected with its history, so as society becomes more electronic in work and language, so too will public history. As a result, public history sites will need robust and effective digital presences that both enhance their physical presence and provide new ways of conveying information. Electronic tools allow for extremely varied possibilities in constructing exhibits and interacting with the content therein, so both physical and digital means will be necessary going forward. Thus, this review of the Patriot’s Point USS Yorktown exhibit in Charleston, South Carolina seeks to demonstrate this principle through their mixed use of both mediums.
